As part of a career development unit taught in coordination with Wilkes Community College, Alleghany High School Junior English students have the opportunity to attend a business lunch with a professional. An inspirational keynote speaker begins the event as they share the journey that has led them to where they are today. Business professionals are seated at each table with the students who are provided instruction and guidance, followed by a meal to practice the proper etiquette of participating in a business luncheon.
The Adopt-a-College Student program pairs a recent Alleghany Educational Foundation scholarship recipient who is attending post-secondary training with each fourth-grade classroom throughout the Alleghany County School System. The college student and the class correspond regularly through digital communication, written letters, and classroom visits. Students in the classroom are exposed to college while college students receive support and accountability from the teacher and students.
In an effort to expand the goal of completing post-secondary credentials throughout the school district, students from the high school (High School Heroes) provide college awareness activities in elementary school classrooms. Heroes talk to students about college and careers and work with the students on classroom projects. Heroes also help 5th grade students develop and present a college and career fair for parents, community members and students in other grades.
